Specialist High Skills Major - SHSM Elective Certifications

Mindfulness is an evidence based approach that supports positive health and well-being.
HEALTH & WELLNESS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
The program offers a variety of options as per the Ministry requirements of 3 elective certifications in the SHSM Health and Wellness Program Sector.
The program is composed the following 2.5-hour modules:
- Stress Management and Resiliency Techniques -
required for any of the following: - Behaviour Management
- Communication
- Leadership
- Fitness
CORE MODULE
Each module actively engages the students in an experiential method that can provide students with a skill set relevant to career opportunities in the health and wellness sector.
The program uses mindfulness-based stress reduction skills and practices, including mindful movement, communication and relationship building with self and others, as well as positive psychology activities exploring well-being.
Each module is delivered in a 2.5-hour period with a 10-minute break to a maximum of 30 students, and can be customized to accommodate school schedules.
OVERALL PROGRAM GOALS
Through mindfulness practice, activities and discussion, students learn to use simple and accessible tools to:
- Reduce the negative impacts of stress
- Support emotional regulation & resilience
- Improve focus and concentration through the cultivation of present- moment attention
- Develop the ability to respond thoughtfully, rather than react, and make suitable choices, which do no harm to one’s self or others.
- Encourage empathy, compassion and sense of community
- Cultivate relationship with self & others
- Provide skills for life
